Synopsis
- In this resource, students will learn about the steps Michigan's DNR is taking to preserve the environment and some tips for Michiganders to contribute to these steps.
- Students will learn about recycling initiatives, forest clean-up programs, building upgrades, and other strategies to protect Michigan's outdoor areas.

Prerequisites
- Students should understand the environmental impacts of littering, pollution, and invasive species.
- Some students may need the terms carcinogen, contaminate, and efficiency defined before they read the pages.
Differentiation & Implementation
- Teachers can organize a school forest clean-up using the Adopt-a-Forest volunteer resources if applicable.
- For classes with limited time, teachers can split students into expert groups, having each group read about a different initiative. Since there is less text depending on the initiative, teachers can also differentiate for reading stamina as they create student groups.
- After reading through the initiatives, students can create pamphlets or infographics to guide campers and park visitors in the safe and conscientious use of recreational areas.
This resource introduces students to Michigan DNR projects to protect the environment. Each project is succinctly presented with additional information linked. Several citizen scientist and volunteer opportunities are listed. Climate change is only discussed in the context of energy efficiency and renewable energy, though this could serve as a foundation for further study. This resource is recommended for teaching.
