Synopsis
- In this lesson, students will count the pollinators they see outside, tally their data, read Stellaluna, and discuss what their data means.
- Students will learn about the interdependence of plants and animals.

Prerequisites
- The beginning of this lesson references a previous lesson where students have learned about different pollinators. Teachers may want to precede this lesson with one that goes over bees, birds, butterflies, and moths as pollinators.
- Students will need clipboards, printed copies of the data sheet, and the book Stellaluna for this lesson. Teachers will also need to take the necessary steps to prepare for an outdoor activity.
Differentiation & Implementation
- After this activity, teachers and students can discuss the importance of pollinators and how we can be good to them. Teachers can explain that pollinators love native plants and potentially transition into a pollinator garden project.
- This resource can be used to make connections to Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life on Land.
- The lesson includes extensions for math, ELA, and career exploration.
This lesson guides students in counting pollinators in their community. The instructions are clear, and they rightly remind students that the absence of observed pollinators is still very important data. This resource is recommended for teaching.
