Interactive Exploration of Coral Bleaching

Ask a Question

  • In this interactive video, students will learn about the symbiotic relationship between corals and zooxanthellae and how changes in ocean temperatures can cause corals to expel zooxanthellae resulting in coral bleaching.
Teaching Tips

  • This resource is engaging and would work well in virtual learning environments or the classroom.
  • The articles offer interactive quiz questions that will provide students with immediate feedback.
  • A PDF transcript of the video is located in the upper righthand corner of the screen.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Pointing the cursor at the bottom of the video will allow students to view the video settings. Students can turn on closed captions or turn on the audio descriptions by clicking the wheel icon.
  • Students will need a computer or other device if they are working in groups or individually.
  • Students must click on the blue boxes that appear when the video pauses to access the extra resources.

Scientist Notes
Coral reefs are very essential in sustaining habitat for phytoplankton and also reducing ocean acidification. This is a good resource to explore coral bleaching and its impact on aquatic resources, the food chain, and humans. It is recommended for teaching.
