Biofuel Energy Production

Ask a Question

  • This interactive map and chart provide students with an opportunity to explore where and how much biodiesel and bioethanol are being produced around the world.
  • Students can select the countries they wish to see on the line graph.
  • Data begin in 1990, and all resources can be downloaded.
Teaching Tips

  • The map and chart are easy to read and can be customized.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Students may need to learn about biodiesel and bioethanol, as there is no explanation or additional information provided in the resource about where the material used to make the biofuels comes from or if those resources are sustainable.

  • Students could explore the various sources of material that could be used for biofuels, such as used cooking oil, food waste, etc. Students could determine which would be the most sustainable choices, as industrially produced crops are likely not sustainable due to their heavy reliance on fossil fuel-based inputs.
Scientist Notes

Biofuel is an important renewable energy source. In this resource, its production is measured in Terawatt-hours (TWh) per year, and volumes have been adjusted for energy content. Biofuel production includes bioethanol, biojet fuel, and biodiesel. Students would learn the relative change in its production from the selected countries. This resource is recommended.
